Blocking

Users' accounts can be blocked. This can occur

  • in the course of excessive traffic (upload and download),
  • because of copyright issues,
  • if the user's computer is attacked by a virus or a computer worm, and therefore endangers the network security.

What can you do to avoid getting blocked?

  • Do not download huge amounts of data for private entertainment.
  • Do not download copyright protected material (movies, music, etc.).
  • Do not perform video conferences with a webcam.
  • Take care of your computer’s safety.

What can I do, in case I am blocked?

Here you can get information about the status of your internet account: www.mac-status.de.

If your computer is infected by a virus or a worm, you have to fix it and report the incident to your local network administrator. The blocking will then be cancelled. If the virus or the worm is not completely removed you will be blocked again immediately.

Please be aware that the Leibniz Universität IT Services have to pay for providing the internet access! So the colleagues are not very happy about few students in the dormitories causing more traffic than all the dozens of employees of the university’s institutes. That is why the Leibniz Universität IT Service controls the traffic (not the contents!) of the users in the dormitories.

According to the contracts of the Studentenwerk Hannover, internet access is only meant for scientific purposes. If a user stands out by causing too much traffic, his or her access will be blocked. In case of recurrence the user’s contract will be cancelled and the user’s access to the network disconnected.
