A broken laptop, a stolen phone or malware: with an up-to-date backup, your assignments, photos and documents are not lost.

The BSI advises regularly backing up the files you have created yourself to at least one external storage medium, such as an external hard drive or a USB stick, and keeping it separate from the device. The easiest way is to use the backup function of your operating system or backup software that does the job automatically.

If you also use cloud storage, make sure your data is encrypted both in transit and in storage. And check from time to time that your backup is complete and that the data can actually be restored.
